Culture shock?

This is a page listing some things to think of so the culture shock is not so bad.
  • The grass is also for admiring and not for sitting on.
  • Fountains are what you admire and take pictures of, not drink from.
  • Public toilets are few and far between and can cost.
  • $1 US=1,5 euros (and things don't come cheap).
  • Showers and toilets are often separate (fancy that, the textbook was right).
  • The BHV in Paris has pink toilet paper; the LDS church building uses Kleenex instead.
  • You have to provide your own bar of soap?!? (Hotel/homestay)
  • Sometimes you have to bag your own groceries with a bag you bring or buy.
  • Paper is longer, and so are notebooks.
  • People look at each other and greet each other with kisses if they are friends.  Otherwise, they don't make eye contact.
  • People don't like me to take their photo. (I have an idea as to why: They think I'll steal their camera!)
  • Parisians really do smoke like chimneys (and they have common sayings and plenty of cigarette butts to prove it!).
  • The military/police has a very overt presence in the airport, metro, tourist spots, and everywhere else.  And the military carry huge guns to show it.
  • Not all Europeans are multilingual and know English well (though it is true for many).
  • Historical/cultural spots are often free for European youth aged 18-25!
  • Carousel seats sometimes have a bike wheel and pedals to push.
  • Europeans are human and are known to be a bit grumpy (with reason, but also can be very nice).
  • French parents are often not married.  :(
  • Car supposedly aren't to be driven on Sundays.
  • Most businesses close 1 day/week.
